Bruce Timm returns to direct Batman in this incredible new animated short. I can’t express how much I love this and would have posted it sooner, if I wasn’t busy watching it over and over and over…

Suggestions for changing paragraphs

Oh my wordDo you realize how annoying it is when you don’t switch paragraphs when a new character is speakingDo you realize how confusing it isI don’t care if they’re using one-word responses at each other, start a new paragraph. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHARACTER.

dear goodness this.no more walls of text please. please.

Puuuh-huh-leeeeease reaaaad thiiiiis DX Walls of text are bad enough but it’s still REALLY ANNOYING when people do something as common as having two people speak in the same paragraph. It is REALLY HELPFUL to comprehension on the reader’s part if you make a new paragraph whenever a new character is speaking! Even if it doesn’t seem necessary, do it anyway, just to make it a habit.

BEFORE BATGIRL, WEIRDER THAN WONDER WOMAN: LOST SUPERHEROINES OF THE PRE-CODE ERA »

saladinahmed:

As I discussed in an earlier post, pre-Comics Code comic books are full of fascinating women superheroes who’ve been more or less forgotten in the decades since WWII. Born in the era of Rosie the Riveter, when there was a national campaign to get women into workplaces, these costumed heroines were brassy, hard-assed, snarky, and sometimes just plain weird. They displayed remarkable grit and independence, and were portrayed as better crime-fighters than the inept, sexist cops that got in their way.

Even removed from their intriguing, important place in sociocultural history, these stories are compelling bits of pure comics nerdery - eg, the fact that 1941’s Spider Queen was almost certainly the unacknowledged inspiration for Spider-Man. These characters deserve to be better known. Happily, the astonishing www.digitalcomicmuseum.org hosts full-issue scans of scores of public domain pre-Code comics. Which means you can read these comics right now, for free!

Here are a few of my favorite lost superheroines from the 1940s. Click on a character’s name to access an archive of their adventures!

FANTOMAH - Arguably the first woman superhero, and to this day one of the strangest. Fantomah is a near-omniscient (blonde) jungle spirit with incredible magical/psionic powers. She is always threatening her enemies with “a jungle death!” and she turns into a green skull with beautiful hair when she’s angry.

LADY SATAN - Sometime Nazi-killer, sometime occult detective, Lady Satan roams the land in her stylish automobile, using gun, garrote, and fire magic to take out Reich agents and child-snatching werewolves.

image

image

MOTHER HUBBARD - Looking like a cartoon witch, speaking only in rhyme, Mother Hubbard uses her bizarre occult powers to battle everything from fifth column saboteurs to Disney-esque dwarves that steal kids’ eyeballs.

image

image

THE WOMAN IN RED - A gun-toting jujitsu expert, the Woman in Red is a sort of costumed private detective. She’s the bane of both criminals (especially those who prey on women) and inept male cops. But to the women she saves she’s quite…tender.

image

image

THE SPIDER QUEEN - A chemistry lab assistant becomes a wise-cracking costumed herowho uses wrist-strapped web shooters to swing around the city and tie up bad guys. But this is 1941, and our hero is a woman.

image

image

THE VEILED AVENGER - Although she’s the frilliest-looking of 40s superheroines, the Veiled Avenger might be the hardest. She uses her crop to make criminals shoot each other…and themselves. And in her civilian life as a District Attorney’s secretary, she scolds dumb cops who endanger witnesses.

image

Sadly, these heroines all disappeared by the 1950s. As the national project of getting women out of the workplace took hold, bold self-sufficient superheroines became scarce on the ground. Despite some great work by amazing artists over the years, comics still doesn’t have enough of them.

[And now, a plug: I’m working on a longer piece on these heroines, and on some other stuff you might find interesting. You can learn more about all that here.]

Gotta get hold of some of that Mother Hubbard stuff! She looks awesome!

I love of all these (except the “jungle spirit” part of Fantomah, I think changing the backstory and her ethnicity would be really cool though), and some of these designs are excellent.  (And I wonder if Stan Lee read the Spider Queen when he was younger now >_>)  I’d totally love to see a resurrection of these characters.  They could be a really cool superhero team!  I really like the Woman in Red from a glance, because she helps women and I think we need more heroines like that.  (Part of why I like Nancy Drew.)

Roamer~

What they smell like:
Evil. No… I mean oily. This sort of smell that doesn’t leave your nose even after you get it full of other smells. It just stuck with you for rest of your life.

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc):
Roamer doesn’t sleep. They don’t need to. But vastly enjoys cuddling and any sort of contact so they most likely just pretend to sleep only to lost count of time and before they know its morning and they are just confused what happened.

What music they enjoy:
They are not huge fans of music. Roamer prefers spoken word with almost no musical background. Or plain instrumental music. Preferably piano music.

How much time they spend getting ready every morning:
Look in mirror, hate what you see and just go on. That is how they roll.

Their favorite thing to collect:
Uhm, they don’t collect things. But they like to collect any sort of experience. Fight? Bring it on. Flirting? Not problem. Anything else? Yeah!

Left or right-handed:
Prefers left hand to right. But both are almost same when it comes to finishing task.

Religion (if any):
None. Roamer doesn’t believe in higher power. Even when they know that higher power personaly.

Favorite sport:
Flirting. Just… yeah.

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc):
Going to Spa or hairdresser. Being taken care of is huge weakness of them.

Favorite kind of weather:
Huge storms. Bigger are betters.

A weird/obscure fear they have:
Roamer doesn’t fear many things. Only thing they fear is Walker for many reasons. And Halls.

The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail:
Roamer loves any sort of violent game. They beat every high score of Mortal combat in  any arcade they were in.

Less ovo

Chen Less is suppose to be my gendeswaped version. XD

What they smell like:
Uhm, like ink and paper most of the time. But he likes Playboy and Avon shampoos so most likely like Waterfall or London Playboy.

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc):
Crashing after long time working and writing is not uncommon for this specie of Blonde Koala. You can notice that they sleep mostly in curled fetal position and tend to snore softly.
Blonde Koala is prone to woke up two hours before going to actual work due to long starting sequence needed for working properly.

What music they enjoy:
Less has no preferences. But when doing art spoken word is preferred to any kind of music. When writing soft and most likely one song on repeat plays. And other times anything that catches his fancy.

How much time they spend getting ready every morning:
Around 2 hours to get ready. Brush teeth, hair, get coffee, something small to eat and finally check all important websites. Not to mention deciding what to wear that day. This task can take up to 30-40 minutes. And most of the time ends with same thing he wore yesterday.

Their favorite thing to collect:
Books, books, character figures and notebooks to scribble in. In his small flat there is no place where he didn’t cram in notebook in cases of sudden inspiration.

Left or right-handed:
Right handed. But for some strange reason he has stronger left arm and his left arm is not as shaky as right.

Religion (if any):
None. But believes in angels and demons. Just not in God.

Favorite sport:
For couch potato Keith (Kristián) is well educated in sport knowledge. Thing that he get from being part of sport family. Favourite would be ice hockey and biathlon. And he loves to cheer for Czech representants.

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc):
Walking around and getting lost. That is what he usually does, what happened too many times and would happen as his sense of direction is almost nonexistent. But show him to nearest metro station and he would be able to get home. After some time.  He likes museums and sights. Quiet places and beautiful scenery, places with history. Anything that can spring inspiration.

Favorite kind of weather:
Starry sky. And full moon. That is not weather? Well damn. But this sort of clear sky is best in his opinion.

A weird/obscure fear they have:
Ha ha ha ha… he knows he is not good enough, ordinary and most of all fears spiders.

The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail:
Any sort of memory games. Pairing up things together and so. But most of all he enjoys telling stories and have fun with little kids.

Fa Don? ouo

What they smell like:
Fa is made of crystals, but many of them had lot of metal in it, so his most prominent smell is metallic. And there is this faint leather smell.

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc):
Opposite to Krystal, Fa doesn’t sleep that much and doesn’t enjoy it. He usually just crashes somewhere near his mistress with sword at hand if needed. He gets irritated about sleep and when he feels tired to drop that is when he gets in his worst moods. Luckily it doesn’t happen too much as he is responsible and tries to take care of himself and Krystal.

What music they enjoy:
Any sort of music that resonates. Loud basses, guitar solos anything that shakes roof and floor. It makes his horns tingly and it tickles. Fa enjoys it.
He is not that fond of wind chimes Krystal puts everywhere since it makes him sleepy. And for some strange reason he loves and knows many medieval music.

How much time they spend getting ready every morning:
Too much time in his opinion. When he wakes up Fa is for some time really confused and disoriented. That is if he wakes up on his own. If something wakes him his body react naturally by grabbing sword and face sound that woke him.  He is light sleeper, but over years with Krystal learned to tune out her snoring. Well sort of rumbling, but that is not important.

Their favorite thing to collect:
Videos and pictures. He likes making such memories and even has his phone or camera with him all the time. Alpha knows how many pictures and videos take up memory on his small computer.

Left or right-handed:
Left handed. He can use his right hand to some extent, but his left is stronger and more agile.

Religion (if any):
To Fa Krystal’s every wish is command. He lives because of her for her. There is nothing else he holds above Krystal and her happiness. But he likes meeting other minions and took on liking Alpha, Myriad and Siael.

Favorite sport:
Fencing. Or any sword related sports. Heck even sword dancing.

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc):
Fa usually stays in godly realms, his horns are hard to miss not to mention his eyes. But when he gets out to mortal realm its usually with Krystal looking at sunsets and sunrises, getting as much pictures as he can to find best one for Krystal to remember it. Or he gets kidnapped by kids who go to convention. That happened in his opinion one too many times.

Favorite kind of weather:
Sunny and dry. He just loves how light makes his horns shine. It can make him giggle and act like kid.

A weird/obscure fear they have:
His biggest fear is not to face death or die. Fa fears that he won’t be enough to save Krystal. That he would fail and she would just give up. So he takes it up to himself to remind his lovely lady about all her friends and good things she does for mortals.

The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail:
Even if he is tiny Fa is really strong and agile. To be frank he is fastest from Krystal’s Guardians. So he is good at any sort of competition that comes from being strong, like those ‘Test your strength’ things and capturing pigs and other animals.

Krystal of course~

What they smell like:
Krystal being made of porcelain doesn’t have any dominant smell. But her clothes mostly smell like blood or paint.

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc):
Even as godly deity Krystal gets extremely sleepy due developing habit of sleeping since it helped her pass time when she was exiled.
She is able to fall asleep in any position imaginable, not finding it strange or disturbing. But mostly she falls asleep while sitting with open eyes (necessary when she attends Godly meetings, nobody suspect a thing).

What music they enjoy:
Krystal loves music boxes and instrumental music. Not to mention any sort of high notes she finds pleasant as it reminds her on sounds that crystal makes and tries to fill her maze with wind chimes.

How much time they spend getting ready every morning:
None. She just usually wakes up and is ready for new day, week or month given how long she decided to sleep. Plus side for being goddess.

Their favorite thing to collect:
Gems, Mirrors, Crystals are given. But Krystal loves to collect movies. Any sort of movies she finds great she would add it to her collection.
There is one secret picture collection of kids she helped to safe with Siael. Believe it or not, when they get her in picture she is always smiling gently.

Left or right-handed:
Ambidextrous but prefers to use her right hand for crystal magic and left for mirror manipulation.

Religion (if any):
Well she herself is icon of her own religion, but she even attends festivals of other gods. Mainly Sayokos, Jujus, Mirffs and Siaels. Sometimes she even put offerings in their temples.

Favorite sport:
Running in mirror maze. She enjoys watching kids in mirror mazes. It makes her feel young again.

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc):
Krystal loves sightseeing and watching scenery, her most favourite thing to do in human realm is watching sunsets and sunrises. Also she likes to visit temples of other gods, learning about mortal culture and most likely would end in group of Slavs/Slavic descendants and end drunk with only faint memory of what happened. For some reason she seems to be Slavic magnet.

Favorite kind of weather:
Rain. Any kind of rain. It tingles on skin, taps windows and makes beautiful songs. Even thought Krystal loves sunny and hot days, rainy days are her favourite because it reminds her on many  happy memories from past.

A weird/obscure fear they have:
Fear of being left behind. And herself. Krystal fears she would be left behind by others, it happened before, as punishment and she understand that. But hell if that happens ever again. She would flip and probably ends even more broken than she is now.
Fear of herself is based on what she is. Part of her is Ickling so twisted and powerful its able to talk and powers concerning heart manipulation comes from it. Other side is Healer, protective spell that grew over time to develop its own consciousness and became twisted over centuries trapped in same place as Beast/Ickling. Krystal/Doll is basically only sane part of whole deity. She is scared of losing control and letting them out.

The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail:
Krystal excels in Dance Dance Revolution and enjoys it to max. It helps to have no muscles that would cramp on you. Only downside is when she forgets to take her high heels off and ends breaking dancing pad.
